Where projects usually get stuck

A sensor that works on the bench is a long way from a device that can be built, tested and trusted.

I've worked on both sides of that gap: taking a continuous glucose sensor process to production at Medtronic Diabetes, and leading sensor development programmes for medtech start-ups, multinationals and EU consortia at CSEM. NEEDED Engineering brings that experience to your team.

  • Promising data on a handful of sensorsbut too much variability across a batch to build confidence for the next milestone.
  • A process that works in the labbut has no documentation, validation or clear route to manufacturing.
  • Several technical teamssensor, microfluidics, electronics, each making progress, but not toward the same integrated device.
  • A funded project with fixed milestonesInnosuisse or EU grants with deliverables, budgets and partners to report to.

Services

Four ways to work together, as a defined project or as ongoing support alongside your team.

Sensor Development & Feasibility

Taking a sensing concept from first idea to a prototype with data you can rely on, and an honest view of whether it is ready for the next step.

  • Enzymatic electrochemical sensors for glucose, lactate and more
  • Microneedles, printed and wafer-level electrodes, membranes
  • Feasibility studies and performance testing

Process Development & Design Transfer

Turning a lab process into one that is repeatable, documented and ready to hand to manufacturing, following ISO 13485 practice.

  • Design of experiments, yield and process optimisation
  • IQ/OQ/PQ, test method validation, Gage R&R and SOPs
  • Transfer to production sites and suppliers

Technical Project Management

Leading complex development projects across several technical teams and partners, keeping scope, budget and timeline on track.

  • Innosuisse, Eurostars and EU-funded projects
  • Coordinating work packages, partners and suppliers
  • Proposals, milestone planning, budgets and reporting

Troubleshooting & Technical Review

An experienced outside view when results don't repeat, a process drifts, or you need to know whether a technology is as far along as it looks.

  • Root-cause and failure analysis
  • Review of data, designs and development plans
  • Clear written recommendations

Brad Petkus

Founder of NEEDED Engineering. Brad spent three years in sensor R&D at Medtronic Diabetes, where he moved from process support to technical lead for wafer-scale printing of the next-generation glucose sensor and took it through to production. He then spent four and a half years at CSEM as an R&D engineer and technical project manager for biosensor programmes, and co-founded NEEDLESS, a CSEM venture for a wearable microneedle glucose and lactate sensor.

What clients and collaborators say about working with Brad.

“I had the pleasure of working with Brad in his role as Project Manager at CSEM, where he led the CSEM side of our development project for a rapid diagnostic testing platform. As the founder and CEO of the medical device startup working with CSEM, I worked closely with Brad throughout the project.

Brad did an excellent job coordinating and managing the communication across three highly technical work packages and their respective teams at CSEM: sensor electrode fabrication, microfluidics, and electronics development for biosensing.

What I particularly appreciated was Brad’s combination of strong technical and scientific understanding with a structured and pragmatic approach to project management. He kept the different teams aligned, maintained transparent communication, and helped keep the project on track despite the complexity of coordinating multiple technical disciplines.

I would highly recommend Brad as a project manager, particularly for complex medtech and deep-tech development projects where strong technical understanding, clear communication, and effective coordination are essential.”

Mathias WipfCEO & Co-founder at MOMM Diagnostics AG

“Bradley worked with my company as a technical project manager on a multidisciplinary project in which three divisions of his employer's company had to coordinate their efforts to build a novel sensor from the ground up. With experience in both project management and sensor engineering, Brad kept an eye on every detail of the technology development without ever losing sight of the major risks. The project concluded with the demonstration of a functional sensor, an achievement that was widely recognized and laid the groundwork for future collaboration between our companies.”

Matija Varga, PhDTechnical Lead at Huawei Research

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Brad on several Innosuisse projects and have seen him grow from a laboratory powerhouse into an exceptionally engaging and communicative project manager.

Brad combines deep technical expertise—particularly in sensor technology—with a rare ability to motivate teams, align stakeholders, and keep complex projects moving forward. His experience at Medtronic and CSEM gives him an unmatched practical and strategic perspective, which he applies with both confidence and humility.

He is a highly capable collaborator who brings energy, clarity, and a genuine team spirit to every project. I would gladly work with Brad again and look forward to when we meet next.”

Alexander Grosse-HonebrinkTeam lead R&D at Ivoclar Vivadent AG

“For almost four years I partnered with Brad during the Chips JU-funded 'Newlife' project, during which Tyndall and CSEM developed a microneedle-based glucose sensor. Ambitious, personable and with a deep knowledge of medical devices and all things diagnostic, Brad was a great person to work with and his inputs drove the project to its successful outcome. I look forward to many more such collaborations in the future!”

Conor O'MahonyTyndall National Institute

“Brad and I worked on a cross-site collaboration for diabetes sensor project in Medtronic. I am more senior than Brad.

We were very impressed by his proactive working style to take a leading role in sensor design, materials and equipment down-selection, and sensor performance study. He took suggestion well from team members and learned quickly from everyone's expertise. He is smart and works hard; meanwhile, he also maintains a humble attitude and team spirits. It was my pleasure to work with Brad. Definately no hesitation to recommend him to any work oppotunities!”

Hannah ChungSr. Principal Process Engineer at Medtronic

“Brad formed the bridge between us and scientific teams in several complex projects. He has always managed to reach good results on time by actively checking in with everyone through calls and emails to eliminate any unclarities quickly.”

Tim BruinesCo-Founder of Sensible Healthcare Systems

“During the past few years I have worked with Brad as an external customer of CSEM in different projects. Brad is intelligent, a creative innovative thinker , has a high drive, excellent communication skills, very customer oriented and a pleasant personality. For this reason it was a pleasure to work with him.”
